MMA Fighters Combat Aches and Pains with CBD Oil Topical Application

Topical CBD and the road to recovery. For MMA athletes, even an easy day consists of being punched, kicked, choked and torqued in all different directions. The stiffness and achiness from constant wear and tear on the body makes it difficult to perform and improve consistently. This is why many athletes are turning to CBD Oil (Cannabidiol) to aid in their recovery and keep them performing at peak levels.

The Science Behind Topical CBD Applications and Muscle Soreness?

As far as the scientific world is aware, all vertebrates (animals with backbones) come equipped with their own natural endocannabinoid system. This consists of endogenous cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) as well as enzymes that break down cannabinoids. This system determines the way we process and utilize cannabinoids within the body, including topical applications such as CBD oil.
  • CB1 Receptors – Expressed in the central nervous system with emphasis on areas in the brain. CB1 receptors are primarily responsible for the psychoactive effects of certain cannabinoid components.
  • CB2 Receptors – Therapeutic applications of cannabinoids have been heavily linked to CB2 receptors given their connectivity to the immune system.
CBD binds to CB2 receptors, inhibiting production of the enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter called anandamide. The purpose of anandamide is to block pain receptors. More anandamide equals less pain.

Why Don’t CBD Topicals Get You High?

Well, for starters, CBD products like Receptra Naturals Targeted Topical do not contain enough THC to have a psychoactive effect. THC is the chemical compound in cannabis responsible for “the high.” Even if they did contain additional amounts of THC, topical products that are not “transdermal” cannot penetrate the bloodstream. Topical applications of CBD bind to receptors directly under the skin. The emphasis of CBD is on the CB2 receptors, which are not psychoactive.
